Vazhaikai masala fry

This side dish can go well with sambar/rasam rice. Quick and healthy recipe made with simple ingredients available at home.

Ingredients

  • Raw banana - 1
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil or any oil of your choice.
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 string curry leaves 
  • 1 tsp lemon juice(optional)
  • salt to taste.
  • Water to boil the raw banana
To grind:
  • 1 tbsp grated coconut
  • 4 to 5 shallots/small onions
  • 1 tsp black peppercorns
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 3 garlic pods
  • 1/2 tsp poppy seeds
  • 2 red chillies

Instructions

  1. Peel the skin of raw banana and cut it into round pieces.
  2. Boil the water in a pan. Add little salt and turmeric powder in it.
  3. Add raw banana.
  4. Let it cook for 2 to 3 mins. Do not cook completely.
  5. Strain the water completely from raw banana. Keep this aside.
  6. Grind the masala ingredients as given. 
  7. Add coconut oil to a pan. Once heated, add mustard seeds. Allow to splutter.
  8. Add urad dal. Once it turns brown, add asafoetida and curry leaves to it.
  9. Add the masala ingredients and cook them until raw smell goes out of it.
  10. Add the half cooked raw banana. Stir it well.
  11. cook them until the masala is well coated with raw banana.
  12. Add salt to taste.
  13. Switch off the flame and add lemon juice as required for the tanginess.

Method

  • Add the half cooked raw banana. Stir it well.
  • Cook them until the masala is well coated with raw banana. 
  • Add salt to taste.
  • Switch off the flame and add lemon juice as required for the tanginess.
  • Stir well and serve.


Notes:
1. Raw banana should only be half cooked in water. They will be cooked completely after adding the         masala. 
2. Adding lemon juice is optional. You may skip if not required. 
3. Raw bananas can also be cut into cube sized or any other size as desired.
